Our History

Menzies Ampol Frenchville was built and began trading in November 1965. Walter Menzies (known to all as Glen) built the building on the corner of Dean and Stewart Streets in the suburb of Frenchville, Rockhampton.  Over the years the Business has traded under Menzies Brothers Pty Ltd and in 2013 this was changed to Menzies Auto Service Pty Ltd. The business currently trades under the names of Menzies Auto Service, Menzies Caltex Frenchville and Menzies Towing Service.

From the first day of trade, Glen’s son Ray Menzies and his wife Del ran and managed the business solely.  This was the case for a number of years and many long hours were put in day and night to ensure the business ran successfully.  Ray Menzies was a fully qualified mechanic and completed his trade at Lawrence Motor Company in Bolsover Street.  Ray was joined by his brother Mervyne after he completed his apprenticeship as a Panel Beater at Lomas Panel Works in Alma Street.

Wayne Menzies joined his two older brothers after finishing his schooling.  Wayne completed his mechanical apprenticeship under the watchful eye of Ray and together the three brothers worked and grew the business.

Today the business is still run by the family, Wayne Menzies is the Director of the business, Raymond and Mervyne have since retired.  During operation the business has given many of the extended family members opportunities to learn trades and participate in this close family business.

Menzies Auto Service has been servicing the Rockhampton and Central Queensland region for 50 years.

The business started as a small service station with two bowsers and two workshop bays.  Over time the business has grown to what it is today with a number of renovations taking place. Today the business has 9 service bays and an RACQ office and is still located in Dean Street at the heart of Frenchville.

Menzies Towing Service was established in 1975.  We started with old Dodges and old Ford D Series Tilt Trays.  We have always kept up with the latest towing equipment and over the years have had a number of different trucks.  Our current fleet consists of Isuzu Tilt Trays which are all fitted with quality Ekebol trays.

On 1st April 1982 we took on the roadside assistance contract for RACQ in the Rockhampton area.  We still hold this contract today and have had the pleasure of servicing RACQ members 24/7 for over 30 years.  Our first roadside assistance vehicle was a Daihatsu F20, she was affectionately known as “Lady Di”.  Over the years we have had breakdown vehicles ranging from Daihatsu’s to Escorts to Mazda Panel vans.  Our current fleet is made up of Toyota Hilux’s, all personally modified and fitted out by local patrolman Colin Cooke.

Today we are still providing the same reliable, quality, friendly service that we offered 50 years ago.  We provide services ranging from 24/7 Towing and Recoveries, Breakdown Service, Fuel & Oil Sales, Log Book Servicing, RACQ Approved Glass Repairer, Chip Repairs, 24/7 Battery Service, RACQ Batteries, RACQ Auto Electrics, Safety Certificates, RACQ Roadside Assistance sales, alterations and payments and Convenience Items.

Over the past 50 years, Menzies Auto Service has employed and trained many apprentices and trainees, and provided support to the community through sponsorship and other donations. We have many long term relationships with other locally owned and operated businesses and always strive to shop local. Today we employ a team of close to twenty full-time employees.

We look forward to the next 50 years in business, striving to find new and innovative ways to provide the best possible service for the motoring public in Rockhampton and the Central Queensland District.
